Play - Step one of the process

On project kick-off day, Makey Makey was introduced. Students were shown a video showcasing the Makey's basic functionality and interactive potential. Each project team was then given a few basic objects (bananas, glasses of water, quarters, etc) and asked to simply play with the Makey. No further instruction was given. Students, being ever-resourceful, quickly found online resources detailing how to operate the Makey as well as gaming sites to test the Makey's gaming function. Soon they were exploring other conductive materials in the classroom and testing out themselves as circuits.

Check out the students in action:

After approximately 15-20 minutes with the Makey, students began brainstorming for their IoT smart object. The Makey play activity was successful in alleviating fears and apprehension regarding the speculative nature of the project. Students were emboldened by their experience with a "new" technology and took to the task of brainstorming with renewed energy and enthusiasm. By the end of class, each team had an IoT concept and direction for further development.
